Police were investigating gunshots fired Tuesday morning in Modesto.

Officers were in the 2700 block of Keller Street, northeast of Coffee Road and Floyd Avenue, shortly before 11 a.m. looking for the person who fired a handgun minutes earlier.

A male reported he had been walking along the 1400 block of Floyd Avenue when another male approached him, said a few words, pulled out a handgun and fired several shots, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves.

The male was not hit, Graves said, and fled as the gunman fired several more shots. The shooter got into a burgundy BMW and drove away.

Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle on Keller. Officers found the vehicle with no one inside, Graves said.

They surrounded a home on the block and called upon the occupants to come out, which they did without incident. Police detained two people, a male and a female. Officers released the male, but took away the female in a patrol car.

Graves did not know whether the target of the gunshots was an adult or a juvenile. He spoke with officers but, not having been shot, did not receive medical treatment.

The male who fired the gunshots still was being sought Tuesday afternoon, and Graves had no description of him.
