Rafting adventure raises money for charity

If you’ve ever wanted to go for a river rafting trip, Saturday is an opportunity to do that while also doing some good.

Sunshine River Rafting Adventures is holding a “Raft for the Cure” fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. For $25, people can take a self-guided, 5.5-mile float trip from Knights Ferry to Horseshoe Park, according to guide and manager Shiloh Foust. All of the proceeds go to charity.

“So far we’ve raised about $6,000 for the American Cancer Society, but we still have a few dozen tickets left for people who want to go out on the river for the day,” Foust said in an email.

Organizers hope by the end of Saturday they will have raised $7,500.

Though the drought remains in full effect, Foust said the Stanislaus River will provide “stable, reliable flows through September,” Foust said.

The effort started in 2009 “as a way for Sunshine to give back to nonprofit organizations in ways that benefited the organizations directly while also giving local people an outlet for outdoor recreation while participating in charity events,” Foust said.

The trip includes paddles, life jackets, boats and a shuttle ride back to the float origin point. Participants are invited to bring their own ice chests with food and drinks.

Tickets are available through the American Cancer Society, (209) 524-7241. More information is available at http://RaftAdventure.com or by calling (209) 848-4800.
