Modesto-area residents topped three of the four categories in an annual nature photography contest sponsored by a conservation group in Twain Harte.

The Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center sought images shot in the mountain range and Central Valley. Prizes of up to $100 were awarded in adult categories, and $50 for youth.

The first-place winners:

Adult landscape: Fred Courter of Denair with his shot of a snowy El Capitan.

Adult wildlife: Rick Kimble of Riverbank with a photo of a red fox.

Youth landscape: Emma Hiller of Escalon with an image of a water drop on a leaf.

Youth wildlife: Devin Chubb of San Diego with his photo of an acorn woodpecker.

CSERC will use these and some of the other entries on its website, www.cserc.org, and in the slide shows it has done for school and other audiences since 1990.
