The man injured when he crashed his Ford Taurus into a tree Monday morning, with a 10-year-old girl in the car, remains in critical condition, Modesto police report.

The driver is Joey Alcutt Jr., 35, of Modesto, Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said. The child, who was airlifted from the scene with moderate injuries, has been released from the hospital. Her name and relationship to Alcutt were not available early Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened about 8:50 a.m., when Alcutt, easbound on La Loma, crossed over into the oncoming lane, then onto a sidewalk, where he crashed into a tree at Las Palmas Avenue.

There is no indication Alcutt was under the influence, Bear said, and witness statements suggest he suffered some type of medical incident.

He was unresponsive and pinned in the car when emergency personnel arrived on scene.
