Upgrade update on Modesto's Kiernan Avenue work
Roadwork to widen Kiernan Avenue will make it harder for customers to reach some businesses east of its Highway 99 interchange, from Monday through early August.
A driveway between Burger King and a Union 76 station periodically will close during the day and reopen each evening. Drivers heading to businesses southeast of the interchange, including two hotels, several restaurants and other shops, must enter a driveway on Sisk Road, south of Kiernan. Eventually, the driveway will remain closed for about three days yet to be announced while crews move underground utilities and install new curbs, sidewalks and paving.
The interchange, which dates to 1970, is undergoing a $44 million upgrade that will make the bridge 50 feet wider, adding a lane in each direction on Kiernan. Crews already have added a storm drain pump station to carry rainwater to the nearby Stanislaus River. The project should be done by fall 2016.
In a separate project nearby, Modesto is remaking its Pelandale interchange with Highway 99 in a $55 million project that should finish in 2017.
