YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Modesto Post 3199, Estanislaus Post 4144 and the American Legion, Modesto Post 74 all worked together to decorate veterans’ graves in Acacia Memorial Park with flags, along with a two-day ceremony. On the second day, Erwin Saloman, captain of the VFW 4144, scattered flowers off the Seventh Street bridge into the Tuolumne River in remembrance of service members lost at sea. And Walter Thompson, former state commander of the VFW, led all three groups in a cemetery service honoring veterans buried in Acacia.
