YESTERYEARS
40 YEARS AGO: In a race to see which thoroughfare was the fastest to go from the east side to the west side of Modesto, Councilman Charles Bird bet Councilman Balvino Irizarry that Briggsmore Avenue was the fastest route over Orangeburg Avenue. The race lasted only 12 minutes with Bird coming out on top. City Traffic Engineer Firoz Vohra said the outcome was sheer luck.
