Woman drives onto railroad tracks in East Modesto

A woman found herself in a dangerous situation Tuesday when she pulled over because her child had gotten loose in her car seat on Parker Road near the Amtrak station in east Modesto. She leaned back to secure the child, realized the car was rolling forward and tried to hit the brake. She hit the gas instead, sending the car through a barrier and onto the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks, where it high-centered. She and the child got out safely. Fortunately, Tom Smith of the Eastside Mosquito Abatement District happened to be there and called the railroad to halt any trains scheduled to come through. Modesto police and the California Highway Patrol responded.
