Two hurt when outbuilding under construction falls in Modesto winds
Two men were injured when an outbuilding in the backyard of a south Modesto home collapsed early Monday afternoon.
The Burbank Paradise Fire District responded about 12:40 p.m. to the report of a roof collapse at a residence on Leon Avenue just north of Pelton Avenue, said Capt. Chris Bernardi, the incident commander.
Crews encountered two men injured in a “sideways roof collapse” of an outbuilding being constructed, he said. The Modesto Fire Department was called to assist with the scene.
One man suffered minor injuries and was standing, and the other was on the ground, with moderate injuries, Bernardi said. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.
The man who was on the ground was brought out on a gurney and was alert. He suffered a leg injury, his daughter said. She said the structure began to wobble in the wind before falling.
The National Weather Service says Modesto had winds of around 16 mph Monday, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
