Info: The Society for disAbilities is partnering with Renew Church and Shelter Cove Community Church of Modesto to host Night to Shine, a special needs prom sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation for individuals with disabilities 14 years and older. The night will be filled with lights, laughter, music, and dancing. What: Chinese New Year Celebration

Info: The Stanislaus Chinese Culture Society, with sponsoring help from the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department, invites the public to the 12th Annual Chinese New Celebration. This is the Year of the Dog and the celebration will feature cultural dances, music, martial arts demonstrations, guest speakers and more. The celebration is free to the public. What: Guided Snowshoe Walks
When: Saturdays, 1 p.m.
Where: Calaveras Big Trees, 1170 CA-4
Info: The Calaveras Big Trees Association invites the public on its guided snow-shoe walks, snow conditions permitting. Snowshoes are provided free to the first 30 people who show up prior to the 1 p.m. starting time. Snow shoes are available for adults and children, or you can bring your own. Suggested check by 12:30 p.m. to make sure there are adequate snowshoes available. If you use the park's snowshoes you must stay with the guide. Experience on snowshoes is not required. Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult. The snowshoe walks take about 90 minutes. COPPEROPOLIS
What: Central Sierra Audubon Society Outing
When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Copperopolis Reservoir, Rock Creek Rd. at Highway 4
Info: The Central Sierra Audubon Society have scheduled outing for interested avian enthusiasts. The outing will begin at the Copperopolis Reservoir and wind its way to the Salt Springs Reservoir. Participants may have a chance to see over-wintering waterfowl, egrets or herons at the ponds and passerines such as Western Meadowlark, American Pipits, White-crowned Sparrows and others. Soaring raptors such as Ferruginous Hawk, Rough-Legged Hawk, Prairie and Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles have been seen in the area. If leaving from Sonora area, meet at 8 a.m. at Perko’s Cafe, 824 Mono Way, to carpool. Otherwise meet at the pond off Highway 4 at 9 a.m. Bring a lunch own lunch. SONORA
What: Friday Flix at the Opera Hall
When: Second Friday, 6 p.m.
Where: Sonora Opera Hall, 250 S. Washington St.
Info: The 2nd Saturday Art Night Committee and the Sonora Chamber of Commerce invite the public to downtown Sonora for monthly movies with opportunities to interact. The 1996 movie “The Birdcage,” made famous by Robin Williams, Gean Hackman, Nathan Lane and Dianne Wiest, will be the next up for moviegoers. The first 50 people will get a program with the words to songs and a goodie bag filled with items related to specific movie cues. The public is encouraged to dress as their favorite character, with prizes awarded. Doors open at 6 p.m., costume contest is at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. 75 YEARS AGO: The Strand Theater announced its movie offerings for public consumption. The theater showed two films; “Lady in a Jam” and “Halfway to Shanghai”. “Lady in a Jam”, a comedy, romance film; starred Irene Dunne, Patric Knowles and Ralph Bellamy. “Halfway to Shanghai”, an adventure, mystery film; starred Kent Taylor, Irene Hervey and Henry Stephenson. The Strand had daily matiness at 1:30 p.m. and evening film showing at 6:30 and 9:15 p.m. The theater was located 1021 10th St. in Modesto.
