MODESTO

What: Author Meet and Greet

When: Thursday, 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Where: Tresetti’s, 927 11th Street

Info: Tresetti’s World Cafe will being holding a book launch party for author Paula Treick DeBoard and her book “Here We Lie”. Author DeBoard will be on hand to talk about her book and the issues in her life that have led her to be a part of the #MeToo movement. The event is free; food, drinks and book will be available for purchase. All author proceeds from the night will go to Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus.

What: Glow Red Luncheon

When: Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Turlock and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Modesto

Where: Larse Banquet Hall, Turlock; the Century, Modesto

Info: Doctors Medical Center, Emanuel Medical Center and Doctors Hospital of Manteca will be hosting celebrity chef, television personality and cookbook author Daniel Green during the first of two Glow Red events to be held on Friday, Feb 2. The purpose of the two events are to raise awareness of heart disease – the leading killer of women in America. On Friday, Glow Red participants will get the opportunity to watch Green during cooking demonstrations which will feature three meals that will all be heart healthy, low carb and contain good fats. Glow Red events will also hear from cardiologists and have the opportunity to learn hands-only CPR. For more information or to purchase tickets call 833-239-2065. Tickets for both events are $30 each or a reserved table for 10 for $300. Women who attend are encouraged to show their support by wearing their favorite red outfit and/or accessories.

What: Black and Brown Mixer and Luncheon

When: Thursday, Feb. 8, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: The Red Events Center, 921 8th St.

Info: Latino Community Roundtable invites the public to its next lucheon. LCR will be celebrating Black History Month with guest speakers and attorneys Angelica Anguiano and Jesse Alexander, III. Anguiano and Alexander will discuss the topic, “Past, Present and Future”. Cost at the door is a $20 donation at the door. For more information or to reserve a seat call 209-522-3066.

What: Columbia Big Band Jazz Festival

When: Friday and Saturday

Where: Columbia College, 11600 Columbia College Dr.

Info: Columbia College Music Department invites the public to the 38th annual Big Band Jazz Festival. The festival will feature more than 400 students from 18 high school and middle school band departments. The festival will run Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Mountain Bookshop or the college bookstore at 209-588-5126 or visit facebook.com/CCJazzArtistSeries.


COULTERVILLE

What: NMCHC Reopening Gala

When: Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m.

Where: Northern Mariposa History Center, 10301 Highway 49

Info: The Northern Mariposa County History Center invites the public to its reopening gala, “Sierra Treasures”. The Gala is the kick-off to the center’s reopening and introduction fund-raising efforts for the recently donated Barret Wing and surrounding grounds. There will be a silent flora and fauna art auction featuring works donated by local artists. A fund-raising goal will be set once the board finishes an initial assessment of the building’s condition. There will also be live music, wine, hot cider, a basket raffle and more. The wine has all been donated by local Mariposa County Wineries. Tickets are $15 each. 40 YEARS AGO: Major League Baseball manager for the Cincinnati Reds, George “Sparky” Anderson planned to speak at Sportsmen of Stanislaus’ Athlete of the Year banquet for Feb. 8, 1978. Anderson served as manager for the Modesto Reds, Minor League High-A team, in 1967 and guided the team to a second-half California League championship. In 1970, Anderson joined Cincinnati to take the team to the National League pennant in his first year and won the World Series in 1975 against Boston. The college and high school athletes that were up for top athlete in each category were: College - Gary Bethel, Doug Burke, Tim Holmes, Rusty Kuntz, Ken Webb, High School - Rick Arnold, Tim Galas, Carrie McLaughlin, Todd Sevick and Steve Streeter.
