75 YEARS AGO: It was reported that the brother of a Modesto resident received a Purple Heart after being wounded in Europe. Lieutenant Jack C. Fisher, Jr., the brother to Mrs. David P. Russell, was one of 13 officers and six noncommissioned officers awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during daylight raids over German occupied Europe. Lt. Fisher learned to fly under the Civilian Pilot Training program in Fresno. He then enlisted in the air corps in 1941 after receiving his wings at the Victorville school. Lt. Fisher was a bombardier during the raids over German occupied territories.
