How much more rain in store for Modesto, foothills this week?
Though some Modesto residents came outside to wet pavement Monday morning, the Modesto Irrigation District recorded no measurable amount of rain at its downtown weather station Sunday or Monday afternoon.
But later this week, local rain gauges may see some action.
The National Weather Service's forecast for Modesto says Tuesday should be mostly sunny, before clouds form at night.
A stronger winter storm will track across Northern California from Wednesday through Thursday night, the weather service predicts. It's expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy precipitation, significant mountain snow and gusty wind.
Modesto could get from half an inch to an inch of rain during that period. Rain Wednesday will be mostly between 4 and 10 p.m., and the weather service puts the chance of precipitation at 80 percent.
Thursday will see a 40 percent chance of showers before the day becomes mostly sunny. A slight chance of showers returns that night.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday should be mostly sunny in Modesto, the weather service says.
In Sonora, the storm system arriving Tuesday night or Wednesday could bring between 1 and 2 inches of rain. The chance of precipitation Wednesday is 80 percent, rising to 100 percent that night.
Thursday, there's a 50 percent chance of showers.
The Dodge Ridge ski resort, which has yet to open this season, reported Sunday that it picked up 6 inches of snow at its summit and 4 inches at its base over the previous 72 hours.
The weather services says it could get 3 to 7 inches more on Wednesday night, and 1 to 2 inches Thursday.
