You don’t have to wait for the sweltering days of summer to get your fair food fix anymore.

All the food on a stick and deep-fried fare you could want will be on sale starting Jan. 26 at the new Fair Food Friday fundraiser for the Stanislaus Veterans Center. The public event is the first of what Veterans Foundation of Stanislaus County CEO Becky Crow plans to be a monthly benefits.

Opened last April, the Stanislaus Veterans Center provides resources and space to local veterans, their families and area military service organizations. The center hosts regular events from groups like the American Legion, Marine Corps League and others in addition to sponsoring its own events.

“Everything we do it to raise money for veterans,” Crow said. “We have 27,000 veterans in the county and our number one focus is to support the military service organizations here.”

The idea for the fair food themed event came from the Cooking Channel show “Carnival Eats,” Crow said. Coincidentally, the Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock was featured on the series in 2014.

The food will all be prepared in the center’s 900-square-foot commercial kitchen. The menu will include foods with names that reference the branches of the military, including Fly Boy Heavenly Cakes on a Stick, Hoo Rah Cheesy Pork Fries, Chinook Chili Burger and Gunny’s Favorite Fried Chicken Sandwich. The price for each item will go toward the fundraiser.

Crow said the staff has been taste-testing the concoctions at the Thursday Day Dances, held weekly at the center, and the response so far has been a hit. Fair Food Friday will run the fourth Friday of each month.

Fair Food Friday will be from 5 to 8 p.m. in the banquet hall of the Stanislaus Veterans Center, 3500 Coffee Road. For more information, call 209-343-6292 or visit www.vetsfoundation.org.
