What: Civil Air Patrol Open House

When: Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.

Where: Modesto Airport, 700 Tioga Way

Info: The Lt. Col. Arthur King Composite Squadron, the Civil Air Patrol of Modesto will be having an open house for new youth cadets ages 12 to 18, at the Modesto Airport. Squadron 50 accepts new cadet members three times per year. The new membership period begins Feb. 1 Prospective cadets must be 12 by the time they join and are required to attend three meetings before being considered for membership. What: Volunteers Needed for Homeless Count

When: Jan. 24-25

Where: Various Locations

Info: The United Way of Stanislaus County and the Stanislaus Community System of Care have partnered to take an official homeless count with the county. There will be two counts, Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2 to 8 p.m., for the homeless who are in shelters and Thursday, Jan. 25, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., for the homeless living outdoors. At the point of contact, volunteers will also hand out comfort care packages to those in need. Volunteers are needed to help with the counts and must be at least 18 years old. What: MJC Science Colloquium

When: Wednesday, Jan. 24, 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.

Where: Modesto JC West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave.

Info: The weekly science solloquium will feature the topic: “Teaching Children with Autism, in the U.S. & Abroad.” The subject is presented by Deborah Laffranchini, MJC Professor, Child Development, in the Science Community Center, Room 115. The Colloquium series offers one-hour discussions on timely science-related topics, and is free and open to the public. There is a $2 charge for on campus parking without a permit. What: Student Voices Campaign

Info: The Student Voices Campaign is a video competition sponsored by the California Alliance for Arts Education. The competition theme asks students to consider the question, “Why the Arts Matter?”. This annual video competition, is a statewide initiative that provides a creative way for students in grades 7-12, to impact school policymaking and make their voices heard. Students are to create a short video, 2-minutes or less, that shows a meaningful, compelling story of why the arts matter to you, someone you know, and/or to the school or community. Where: Tuolumne County Arts Alliance, 251 Barretta St.

Info: The Tuolumne County Arts Alliance presents the 31st annual InFocus Photography Competition and Exhibition. Entries are being accepted using the web-based competition management system client.smarterentry.com/tcaa. The deadline for final entries is Jan. 22 by 6 p.m. The Call for Entry, instructions and further information can be found at Infocus-tcaa.org. This year’s competition will accept entries in the categories of: landscapes, nature, in the moment, still life/found object, elements of design and water in all its forms. 100 YEARS AGO: It was announced through orders of the War Department that Stanislaus County would be the site of a new National Guard unit. The orders were for the unit to accept drafted men for enlistment and they would not be called for draft service if the company were sent to a training camp. The City of Turlock planned to send 25 men, Modesto 50 with the enlistment age ranging between 18 and 45 being eligible.
