Two storm systems for Valley and mountains. What will they deliver in rain and snow?

Modesto Bee file

Two storm systems that will pass through Modesto over the next five days could bring as much as a half an inch of rain, the National Weather Service has predicted. The low end of the precipitation forecast shows the area receiving less than a quarter inch through Monday.

The first system will be around through Friday night, the weather service says. In Modesto, rain is expected after 5 p.m. and mainly before 11 p.m. Thursday. The weather service puts the chance of precipitation at 80 percent, with amounts between a tenth and a quarter inch.

Friday, there's a 40 percent chance of showers, mostly before 5 p.m. Less than a tenth of an inch is expected. Friday night, the chance of rain drops to 20 percent, before 11 p.m.

Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny, before clouding over again that night.

The chance of rain returns to the area with the second storm system Sunday and Monday, says the weather service, noting that Modesto could again get between a tenth and a quarter inch those days.

"Both of these storms are colder than what we've recently experienced across the region," the weather service shared in an email. Expected highs in Modesto over the next several days are near 60 Thursday, 55 Friday, 54 Saturday and Sunday, and 57 Monday and Tuesday.

In the foothills, Sonora could get between a tenth and a quarter inch of rain through Friday and a quarter to half inch Sunday through Monday, the weather service predicts.

The systems "have the potential to bring heavy mountain snow," the weather service said. Snow levels for the system through Friday are 2,500 to 3,500 feet, and for the Sunday-Monday system are 3,000 to 5,000 feet. Sonora Pass is predicted to receive 8 to 12 inches of snow through Friday night, and 2 to 3 inches more between Sunday and Monday.

The forecast for the area of the Dodge Ridge ski resort says 4 to 8 inches could fall Thursday night, and less than an inch Friday. The Dodge Ridge website says opening day is coming soon. "These are cold and snowy storms and we’re all waiting in anticipation to see just how much we’ll receive from these systems," the resort's weather page says. "... We’re ready to open once Mother Nature delivers."
