That smoke you saw Tuesday morning in Hughson? Here is what it was.

Fire did an estimated $50,000 damage to a building at Hughson Nut on Tuesday morning.

There apparently was an equipment malfunction in the plant's baghouse, which collects almond dust as the nuts' skins are dried. Hughson Fire Protection District was first on scene to the report of a commercial structure fire and found heavy smoke and fire in the building, said Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Eric DeHart.

Stanislaus Engine 25 deployed a water line and contained the fire, he said. Other responding units, including those from the Modesto and Ceres fire departments, assisted in cutting open the metal building to gain access to hard-to-reach fire spots, DeHart said.

Damage was done to the building and machinery, but there were no injuries. DeHart said Hughson Nut workers go into the baghouse from time to time to service it, but it's not regularly occupied.

The exact cause of the fire remained had not been determined. A fire investigator was on scene.
