Sonora honors Rev. King. Other birthday events await in Modesto and Merced this week
A woman who helped lead a notable march last year spoke Sunday about similar messages from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
A large crowd gathered in the Sonora High School auditorium for an 89th birthday tribute to the civil rights leader. The keynote speaker was Carmen Perez, co-chair of the Women’s March to protest President Donald Trump’s election.
King was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta and assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968. Other events in the region:
Monday, Modesto: Christian Love Baptist Church will present its annual event at 10 a.m. at Second and H streets. It will feature by Daryl Camp, superintendent of the Riverbank Unified School District.
Monday, Merced: The annual event will start with an 11 a.m. march from the Merced County Fairgrounds, at Eighth Street and Martin Luther King Way. The march will end at the Merced Theatre on Main Street, where a noon program will be held.
Saturday, Modesto: Farm worker leader Dolores Huerta will speak at Modesto Junior College. It will be at the Performing Arts and Media Center Auditorium, 435 College Ave., on the East Campus. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the program will start at 7 p.m.
