Update: Man killed when he loses control of car on Highway 99 in Ceres is identified
A Stockton man who lost control of his car on southbound Highway 99 in Ceres was struck by two big rigs Monday morning and died of his injuries.
The crash occurred at about 4:20 a.m. south of Whitmore Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. Emergency personnel arrived to find a 2004 Honda sedan blocking the No. 2 lane and the two tractor-trailers on the right shoulder of the highway.
The driver of the Honda, 51-year-old Fidel Alvarez-Angulo, was taken to Doctors Medical Center, where he later died.
The CHP report says Alvarez-Angulo was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control and crossed traffic lanes into the paths of the big rigs. His Honda came to a stop facing north in the No. 2 lane. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 lanes were closed during the crash investigation.
The drivers of the big rigs were uninjured. They were identified by the CHP as Daniel R. LaPirre, 45, of the town of Rosthern in Saskatchewan, Canada, and Jose Godinez, 52, of Prosser, Wash.
The CHP said it was unknown Monday morning if drugs or alcohol contributed to the cause of the crash.
