Modesto man killed in Highway 99 crash early Sunday

A 27-year-old Modesto man died in a single-car accident on Highway 99 early Sunday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The rollover accident was reported at 3:37 a.m. on Highway 99 southbound near Beckwith Road in north Modesto. First responders arrived on scene and found a 2004 Dodge Durango, with the driver several feet from the truck. Emergency personnel declared the driver dead at the scene, the CHP said in a news release.

The driver’s name has not been released pending notification of his family.

Investigators determined the Durango was driving south on the freeway when for an unknown reason it left the road. The truck hit a light pole on the right shoulder, then went down an embankment and hit a chain link fence. The Durango rolled over several times, ejecting the driver.

Investigators do not yet know if drug or alcohol was a factor in the crash, the CHP said.
