100 YEARS AGO: An ad in the Modesto Evening News announced the Modesto Business College had openings for its day and evening classes. The ad encouraged readers to answer the call of Uncle Sam, as the government needed 10,000 stenographers and typists, who could earn $1,200 to $12,000. The call was in response to the United States declaring war on Germany. Modesto Business College was located at 925 Tenth Street and J.M. Culpepper was manager.
