Man found dead in east Modesto house fire identified

The elderly man who died in a house fire last week was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner's Office on Tuesday as Mack Crook.

Firefighters found the 78-year-old man dead in a bedroom of a home on Redberry Way Thursday. Crook's grandson escaped the house fire but told firefighters his grandfather was trapped inside.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but appears to have been accidental, started when an exposed light bulb ignited nearby clothing stacked on a dresser.

Crook's cause of death is pending toxicology results.
