Discarded mattresses catch fire inside abandoned Modesto warehouse
A warehouse fire with burning mattresses inside was brought under control by Modesto firefighters on Friday night, authorities said.
Nobody suffered injuries.
At about 9:55 p.m., Crews were called to the area of South Santa Cruz Avenue off Yosemite Boulevard on a report of a fire, according to Modesto Fire Department Battalion Chief Darin Jesberg.
When crews arrived, people led firefighters to a building on nearby Ruffino Avenue, where there was word that people might have been inside the abandoned building.
Jesberg said there were discarded mattresses – maybe up to 50 – inside burning.
The fire was contained in about 30 minutes. Crews checked inside and found no one there. Jesberg said it appeared people had been living inside.
There was no structural damage to the building. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
