25 YEARS AGO: It was reported that Modesto City Schools planned to lease its driving simulators to Modesto Junior College, which would administer a 12-hour training course for teen-age students. The cost for the course was $135; students under 18 had to complete the course if they wanted a driver's license. The fees were about $14 to $24 less than what private companies, at the time, charged for six hours of behind-the-wheel training. Modesto City Schools cut the program from the budget due to the lack of money and after three years of paying for the training without reimbursement from the state.
