Blast from the past? Storage unit near Don Pedro yields something unusual
A woman found explosives from the World War II era in a storage unit near La Grange on Monday, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reported.
It called in the Calaveras County bomb squad to remove the 11 devices, including both American and Japanese items, a Facebook post said.
The collection, at Lake Don Pedro Storage, was found by a woman cleaning out her deceased father’s unit, the post said.
“The bomb tech took possession of the three Japanese grenades, two American rifle grenades, two large mortar rounds, three pieces of Japanese ordnance, and a 20mm round to be disposed of in a safe manner,” the department reported.
People finding such devices should not touch them but instead call law enforcement, the post said.
