Ceres woman who died after driving into California Aqueduct identified
The Ceres woman who died after crashing into the California Aqueduct near Westely on Wednesday has been identified as Ani Shamamian.
The 54-year-old was westbound in a Toyota sedan on Howard Road at about 10:30 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle partially entered the north shoulder, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Shamamian turned south and lost control; her car traveled over an embankment and into the aqueduct.
She called 911 to say her vehicle was sinking but the line disconnected, according to the CHP. The Toyota was submerged in about 30 feet of water by the time first responders located the point of impact.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff Department's Dive Team recovered Shamamian's body a few hours later.
