50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that E & J Gallo Winery would offer long-term contracts, that guaranteed a minimum price, to growers who were willing to plant varietal grapes. It was the first time in the history of the wine industry that a grower-security package had been offered. Julio Gallo said the company would offer a 15-year contract to growers. The varities that were in demand were; French Columbard, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc of the white grapes. For the red grape varieties, Ruby Cabernet and Barbera.
