A driver suspected of DUI was ejected and suffered major injuries when his van ran off the road and crashed into an orchard in the area of Tully Road and Pelandale Avenue early Wednesday, Modesto police report. His passenger suffered minor injuries.

An information-and-belief warrant was issued for the arrest of driver Alejandro Alvarez, 22, said MPD spokeswoman Heather Graves. He will be taken into custody when released from the hospital, she said.

At 12:48 a.m., Modesto Fire Department crews responded to a report of a vehicle accident with multiple patients pinned in and at least one person ejected.

The van had been westbound on Pelandale when it veered off the road, went airborne and rolled an undetermined number of times, Graves said.

The first engine arrived to find a white van on its side, about 100 feet into an orchard.

Two people were found outside the van, but the van roof was crushed to the point firefighters could not see inside. They removed the roof and found the van empty.

Graves said Alvarez's 22-year-old male passenger, whose name was unavailable, was not ejected from the van. He apparently got out on his own.

The two men were taken to local hospitals. A firefighter rode in an ambulance with Alvarez, to assist an AMR paramedic, according to an incident report by Division Chief Tim Tietjen.
