A man suffered minor injuries Tuesday night in an apparent suicide attempt along railroad tracks in downtown Modesto, police said.

The 35-year-old man was walking on the Union Pacific Railroad at Eighth and I streets when a freight train struck him at about 7:30 p.m., Lt. Aaron Tait said. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The train remained stopped as emergency workers responded to the scene, blocking traffic on some streets.
