What: DEMOCRATIC WOMEN’S CLUB MEETING

Info: The Democratic Women’s Club of Stanislaus general meeting will celebrate Earth Month. The guest speaker will be Dana Nuccitelli from Citizens Climate Lobby in Sacramento. Nuccitelli will speak on the topic of global warming and legislation before Congress, which deals with the carbon tax. Bring recyclable glass, plastic bottles or aluminum cans. The recycling donations will benefit The Yokuts/Sierra Club.

Info: The Newcomers and Friends Club of Modesto is a social club where ladies have the opportunity to meet others with similar interests. Info: Applications are being accepted for the Anthony P. Forakis Scholarship to be awarded by the Forakis family and the Modesto “500” Lions Club Scholarship Committee. Applicant criteria include: city of Modesto high school senior or Modesto high school graduate attending junior college or college; age 17-24, music major or minor; musical accomplishments and future goals; overall academic achievement; letters of recommendation; financial need; community service; quality of original essay on the topic of “Why I should receive a scholarship and how this will affect my personal and musical development.” For more information or to obtain an application, call Patricia Gillum, Anthony P. What: LIFEGUARD TRAINING CLASS
When: Tuesday-April 9
Where: El Capitan High School pool, 100 Farmland Ave.
Info: Lifeguard certification training is sponsored by ASA Aquatics and the city of Merced Parks and Recreation Department and El Capitan High School. Participants will learn American Red Cross lifeguard training, standard first aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer. Requirements to participate: students must be 15 years old; able to swim 300 yards without stopping, using freestyle and breaststroke; able to retrieve a 10-pound weight from a depth of seven feet and swim 20 yards with the weight only using legs. There will be a test on those skills. Cost of class is $245. A sign-up packet that includes parental consent is available at the Merced Parks and Recreation Department. 50 YEARS AGO: In a proposed plan to lower the city of Ceres tax rate by tripling its size, the Stanislaus County Local Agency Formation Commission was to consider and possibly approve a plan April 21 of allowing the city to annex 1,700 acres of land between the city and Modesto.
