Fire damages house on River Road in Ceres; burning couch produces most of the smoke

A fire Thursday afternoon did moderate damage to a house on the 600 block of River Road in Ceres.

The flames and smoke caused about $15,000 in damage, mainly from a couch burning in a bedroom, said Battalion Chief Darin Jesberg of the Modesto Fire Department. It helped the Ceres department on the call.

The cause is under investigation, Jesberg said. No injuries were reported.
