Deputies, firefighters search for missing swimmer at Modesto Reservoir

Authorites are looking for a missing Turlock man who went under the water at the Modesto Reservoir.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’ deputies and Modesto and Stanislaus Consolidated firefighters are using boats and a helicopter to search for the swimmer.

Friends said Nelson Guerra, 21, was trying to swim to an island when he was last seen.

Robert Zavala said he has gone swimming with Guerra several times and described him as very fit.

Zavala said they were with a group that went to the reservoir for the afternoon.

A Modesto Fire Department searcher said there is a pocket of vegetation about 25 to 30 yards offshore that is complicating the search.

Family members of Guerra have arrived on the scene; Zavala said he called them to tell them what happened.s
