He was stopped for a traffic violation. Then authorities called the bomb squad.
A routine traffic stop turned into a not-so-routine discovery in Lathrop early Monday.
At 1:50 a.m., deputies from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department stopped Chad Anderson for a vehicle violation.
During the stop, deputies discovered a loaded pump shotgun, a small vial of a white substance suspected to be crystal methamphetamine, and five homemade explosive devices. Nine illegal fireworks also were found.
The San Joaquin County Metropolitan Bomb Squad was called in to collect the explosive devices and assist in the investigation.
Anderson was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail for the following charges: Carrying a loaded firearm in public, possession of destructive device materials, five counts of possession of a destructive device, nine counts of unlawful possession of fireworks, and possession of a controlled substance.
