Intoxicated pedestrian killed crossing poorly lighted highway in Escalon
A 65-year-old man died late Thursday when hit after stepping into the path of a vehicle on Highway 120 at Campbell Avenue in Escalon, according to police.
Officers responded to a report of a body in the roadway shortly before 11 p.m., said Escalon police Sgt. Gustavo Flores. It quickly was determined that a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision had occurred. The driver involved pulled over, called 911 and remained at the scene.
Two pedestrians had walked from the north side of 120 and were waiting in the double turn lane in the center, Flores said, when one of the men stepped into the path of a vehicle in an eastbound lane.
The crash occurred in a poorly lighted area, the sergeant said, there is no crosswalk, and both pedestrians were under the influence of alcohol. The blood alcohol content of the man who was killed has not been determined. The man was an Escalon resident, but release of his name was pending notification of family.
The second pedestrian was not struck, and neither was the vehicle’s driver injured, Flores said.
