What: Public Safety Appreciation and Flag Day Ceremony
When: Wednesday, 5 p.m.
Where: Modesto Elks Lodge, 645 Charity Way
Info: The Modesto Elks Lodge #1282 and Modesto Antlers #1282 will be recognizing the efforts of local law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel in a special program. The ceremony will start with a flag ceremony and retirement, dinner and awards. The dinner is free to all emergency services personnel within Stanislaus County, with ID card. For all others, $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door. What: Native Sons of the Golden West Meeting
When: Wednesday, 6 p.m.
Where: Perko’s Cafe, 901 Carpenter Road
Info: The Native Sons of the Golden West, Modesto Parlor #11, will be hosting a no-host dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a presentation by Amos Santweir: “The Hetch Hetchy Project Part-II”. The Parlor is planning an entry in the Fourth of July parade and other family activities. The public is invited to attend this meeting. Info: The Sons in Retirement, Branch 144, will be having a lunch meeting that will feature guest speaker Jerry Glasser, SR-71 Blackbird instructor, pilot and director. Glasser will speak on “The Future of Commercial Aviation”. Sons in Retirement is a club for retired men who meet to renew friendships, discuss issues and plan participation in activities such as golf, bowling, pickleball, dining and traveling. What: Father’s Day Excursion Train Rides
When: Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, 18115 5th Ave.
Info: Railtown 1897 State Historic Park will be conducting a special program on Father’s Day by providing excursion train rides on the “Movie Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3. Interested guests can enjoy a six-mile, 45-minute round trip ride along the rails of the famous “Movie Railroad”. Seats are limited, early arrival is encouraged. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youths age 6-17 and children under 5 are free. All train ride tickets include Park admission and are available for advance purchase at railtown1897.org.

40 YEARS AGO: For the fourth consecutive month, unemployment in Stanislaus County had declined. The county’s unemployment rate dropped from 12.4 percent to 11.9 percent in the month of May, with 3,200 residents returning to work. At the time of the report, there were 106,700 county residents in the workforce with 18,100 without employment. Neighboring counties saw a drop in unemployment of 0.8, 0.6 and 2 percent respectively.
