What: VFW “Buddy Poppy” Donation Drive

When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Save Mart and Walmart locations

Info: Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Post 3199, will be conducting its annual Memorial Day “Buddy Poppy” drive. Donations go to the Veteran’s Relief Fund to help veterans and their families. For more information contact Dan Cruz, 209-521-9632.

What: Alzheimer's “Preparing for the road ahead”

When: June 1, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Where: Sutter Gold Medical Foundation, 1700 McHenry Ave.

What: Spring Peddler’s Fair

Where: Bristol’s Ranch House Café, 961 Hwy 4

Info: The 39th Annual Spring Peddler’s Fair will be held over Memorial Day weekend in the town of Arnold on Highway 4 (Ebbett’s Pass). The Peddler’s Faire will feature about 70 booths: Antiques, collectibles, original art & crafts and more. The fair will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Arnold both days. What: Oakdale and Manteca VFW Golf Tournament

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.

Where: Manteca Park Golf Course, 305 N. Union Rd.

Info: The Oakdale VFW Post 2922 and Manteca VFW Post 6311 will be co-hosting a golf tournament at Manteca Park Golf Course. Registration is 10 a.m., shotgun start 11 a.m.; cost is $65 per player or $250 for a foursome. RIPON

What: Fundraising Concert

When: Saturday, 6 p.m. to midnight

Where: Main Street Inn, 130 E Main St.

Info: The concert benefits amputee Robert Ballesteros with medical adaptives and home care. Ballesteros was injured on the job in the Bay Area shipyards in the 1990s. Surgeons implanted a plate in his wrist to help stablize, only to have his body reject the implant requiring surgeries and gradual amputations of right arm. TWAIN HARTE

What: Memorial Day Weekend Chili Cook-Off

When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Meadow Plaza, 23000 Meadow Land

Info: The Twain Harte Area Chamber of Commerce will be having its first Memorial Day Weekend Chili Cook-Off. The event will also feature kids activities in the nearby park. 75 YEARS AGO: The federal government designated Stanislaus County as defense rental area. The county was 1 of 18 areas to get such a designation, including the state of Alaska. The government required that local rent prices be cutback to March 1 or the government would step in to enforce the request. The sixty day notice was given by the Office of Price Administration for those area believed to be important war production and military training centers. Overall, there were 342 designated areas for rent reduction that would affect some 87 million residents.
