Modesto up next after German takes first stage of Amgen Tour of California bike race

Marcel Kittel of Germany won Sunday’s first stage of the Amgen Tour of California in and near Sacramento. The second will run Monday afternoon from Modesto to San Jose.

The world-class bicycle race returns to Modesto after a six-year hiatus. Riders will set out at 12:10 p.m. outside the Gallo Center for the Arts, at 10th and I streets. They will do two laps of downtown before heading across the West Side and over Mt. Hamilton — 89.8 miles in all with 8,400 feet in elevation gain.
