Pedestrian badly hurt when struck by a car in downtown Modesto

A pedestrian tentatively identified by police as a 48-year-old woman suffered major injuries when struck by a car while walking across I Street on Thursday night.

The driver was eastbound on I Street approaching Seventh Street when she spotted the woman in front of her but was not able to avoid the collision. It was unclear Friday morning whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, but the driver had a green light to go through the intersection, said police spokeswoman Heather Graves.

The pedestrian suffered a head injury and was taken to a hospital, where she was in critical condition.
