40 YEARS AGO: It was announced the Modesto City Council authorized the hiring of an expert to help develop restoration plans for the McHenry Mansion. Colleen Bare, chairman of the city’s Culture Commission, suggested the expertise of Wayne Mathes to help in the development of the plans. Mathes had a degree in museum science, restored old homes and had been in the process of restoring the Camron-Stanford House in Oakland. McHenry Mansion was a gift of $150,000 from the Julio Gallo family.
