100 YEARS AGO: It was announced that a meeting was held in Modesto between farmers and irrigationists. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss combating the methods used by the real estate speculators in districts where a program of development was being implemented. A committee of five was appointed by chairman of the meeting, C. F. Smith, and was to draft a plan for submission to landholders in the district. The group said it was not its intention to to work against the real estate dealers, but with them, so long as they do not put inflated prices on the land.
