San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a beating in the news and on social media this week.

Kaepernick, a graduate of Pitman High in Turlock, was lambasted by a Miami Herald columnist for wearing at a news conference a T-shirt emblazoned with photos from a 1960 meeting between Malcolm X and Fidel Castro.

Coincidentally, Castro died just a few days later.

On Sunday, Kaepernick – who has also caused controversy with his well-publicized national anthem protests — was heavily booed as he took the field against the Miami Dolphins.

Kaepernick played well, but came up two yards short with the chance to score the tying (or, with a two-point conversion, winning) touchdown on the final play of the game. The 49ers fell to 1-10 with the 31-24 loss.

Another coincidence was not lost on social media — one of the players making the game-saving tackle was Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso, a Cuban American.

After the game, Kaepernick attempted to clarify his stance on the Castro issue.
