40 YEARS AGO: The Modesto City Council approved regulations on the size of commercial signs that hang over public sidewalks. The council decided that any sign hanging 8 feet over a city sidewalk could be no larger than 48 square feet. They also said signs in the set-back areas of buildings could be full size, or 72 square feet. The council’s decision was a part of a new draft measure on commercial sign usage and size conformity.
