Success & Service: Salida man among six winners for Young Innovators prize and $20,000
Emmanuel Escamilla of Salida is one of the six winners of the 2016 Westly Prize for Young Innovators and will receive a $20,000 grand prize. Escamilla, who attends Harvard University, won for his computer science programming project for low-income middle school students.
His work includes a coding project at Hanshaw Middle School in west Modesto. He was featured in a story by The Modesto Bee’s Nan Austin in July 2015.
Cowbelles, cattlemen groups donate beef to schools
The Mid Valley Cowbelles recently donated $1,000 of fresh ground beef while the Stanislaus and Merced cattlemen’s groups each donated $500 worth to assist home economics cooking classes in 13 area schools.
The recipient schools included Downey, Hughson, Turlock, Mariposa, Merced Union, Pitman, Modesto and Ceres high schools; the Stanislaus Culinary Arts Institute; Oakdale, Turlock and Roberts Ferry junior highs; and Roberts Ferry Union Elementary School.
The teachers from those schools visited the Stanislaus Culinary Arts Institute in Oakdale on Nov. 4 to receive the meat.
Several from Backcountry Horsemen in Rose Parade
Carlena Kellogg and John Marshall, both of Modesto, are among the 15 members of the Mid Valley Backcountry Horsemen invited to ride in the 128th Tournament of Roses Parade, scheduled for Jan. 2 in Pasadena. The organization, with 400 volunteer members, helps maintain trails in the high country and also along the Tuolumne River in the Modesto area. The others members invited are Barbara Savery of Sonora; Sally Mole of Mokelumne Hill; Mary Beth Baglione, Barbara Baglione, Anna Baglione and Nina Cash of Escalon; Denise Ann Davis of Twain Harte; Dennis Serpa of Oakdale; Jerry Ann Thomas of Turlock; Katherine Reeves of Ceres; Melissa Hardy of Atwater; and Carl Perry and Judy Perry of Hilmar.
