What: Masquerade charity gala fundraiser

Info: Funds raised will go to further the mission of the Stanislaus Health Foundation, which is to provide support to the Valley Family Medicine Residency Program and the Health Services Agency through health care scholarships, preventive programs, and equipment for quality patient care. KNIGHTS FERRY

What: “String of Pearls” bird migration pools

When: Saturday, 8 a.m.

Where: Knights Ferry Visitors Center, Sonora Road

Info: The Central Sierra Audubon Society will be offering a bird-watching outing along the Stanislaus River. The fall migration of birds is at its peak, and many of the migratory birds hang out in a series of pools – a“String of Pearls” – as they stop for a rest. Those interested to joining the outing are advised to meet at Perko’s on Mono Way at 8 a.m. to carpool to Knights Ferry or meet the group at the Knights Ferry Visitors Center at 8:30 a.m. For more information, call Paulo Maffei at 209-532-8426.

What: Seventh annual Dia de los Muertos celebration

When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Main Street Murphys

Info: Murphys merchants and tasting rooms will be celebrating the town’s seventh annual Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos. Participating businesses and vendors will offer authentic cultural art, food, sugar skulls, face painting and live music, as well as displaying ofrendas (altars) celebrating the lives of those who have passed on but remain in heart and spirit on the Day of the Dead. 75 YEARS AGO: A new musical organization, the Modesto String Ensemble, was making its debut with a free concert at First Christian Church on 11th and G streets. The musical director was Leonardo Fristrom. The ensemble was made up of 35 musicians and planned to present three free concerts for the winter season. Fristrom said he hoped that the string ensemble would supplement the Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s efforts to bring classical and popular music to the public.
