25 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the Modesto Veterans Parade, sponsored by the Modesto Jaycees, would be canceled. The traditional sponsor of the event, the Jaycees learned that the insurance premium for the $1 million policy mandated by the city of Modesto had quadrupled from the previous year. The cost of the premium for the previous year’s parade was $210, as stated by Andrew Rowan, then president of the Jaycees. The reason for the hike was that the original national insurance carrier for the group had dropped out over a lawsuit in Southern California the previous year and decided to leave the state. The Jaycees would have had to pay $1,107 for a 20-minute event, and were forced to pay $1,650 to insure that year’s Fourth of July Parade.
