UC Merced to honor Anita Hill with Spendlove Prize
Anita Hill, who raised awareness about sexual harassment when she testified in the 1991 Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court justice nominee Clarence Thomas, will be honored Monday by UC Merced in a ceremony downtown.
She will receive the Alice and Clifford Spendlove Prize in social justice, diplomacy and tolerance. The event will be at the Art Kamangar Center at the Merced Theatre, 301 W. Main St. in Merced, beginning at 6 p.m.; it is open to the public.
Hill is an attorney and professor of social policy, law and women’s studies at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., and a faculty member of Brandeis’ Heller School for Social Policy and Management.
The Spendlove Prize was established in 2005 through a gift to the university from Sherrie Spendlove in honor of her parents, lifelong Merced residents Alice and Clifford Spendlove.
Charles Ogletree, Hill’s legal counsel during the hearings, received the inaugural Spendlove Prize in 2005 and spoke at UC Merced’s opening. He will be on hand for the ceremony.
