What: Native plant sale

Where: Calvary Baptist Church at 1732 Miller Ave.
Info: The California Native Plant Society will be conducting the sale to support the developing La Loma Native Plant Garden on Encina Avenue. Residents are encouraged to buy a plant for their own home landscapes, as well as plants for the native garden. Fall is the best time to plant natives, so come take a look at some options for drought tolerant landscapes.
What: Yokuts Group/Sierra Club Monthly Meeting

What: “Tales of the Roundhouse”
When: Saturday, 6 p.m.
Where: Railtown 1897, 18115 Fifth Ave.
Info: The California State Parks, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and California State Railroad Museum Foundation present a lantern-lit “Tales of the Roundhouse” haunted tours. The one-hour tours begin at 6 p.m. and continue at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.. Park guides take visitors to six different locations in the park and deliver stories about ghostly residents — who may still haunt the grounds — and how they met their grisly and untimely ends. Content may not be suitable for children under 12. Limited space, advanced tickets recommended; $15 adults, $10 youth 12-17. Info: The 13th annual Turlock/Modesto AAUW fundraiser to benefit seventh-grade girls attending a STEM camp at Fresno State; high school scholarships at Enoch High School Biotechnology program; Turlock/Pitman high schools; a scholarship for Stanislaus State female e-members to attend AAUW’s national college women’s leadership conference at the University of Maryland; and graduate fellowships. Tickets are $45 per person or $400 for a table for 8, tickets must be purchased by Oct. 27. Social includes wine, buffet dinner auction and more. 75 YEARS AGO: It was announced that the City of Turlock would have a Halloween Parade at the fairgrounds, in the exposition building, on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The parade was a part of the Far West Turkey Show and would include entertainment and 6 different judging categories. The judged divisions were: Largest illuminated pumpkin, Jack O’Lanterns with the most expressive faces, best costume – boys and girls under 9, best costume – boys and girls over 9. There was also the annual Damon Runyon turkey contest. Coffee and doughnuts were provided to the public free of charge.
