Success & Service: Raley’s, Prairie Grove Farms team up to help veterans

Prairie Grove Farms, in partnership with Raley’s, contributed $50,000 to the Farmer Veteran Coalition. A portion of every Prairie Grove Farms product purchased at Raley’s helps provide veterans of all eras and branches with viable employment and meaningful careers in farming and ranching. These opportunities offer returning veterans a sustainable place in their community, while also strengthening rural economics.

Funds will be used to support specific programs including the Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund, which provides small grants to veteran farmers for the tools needed to grow or maintain a sustainable farming future. The fund aids veterans beginning a career in food and farming, and aides with business expansion, ensuring a smooth military transition. The grantees are awarded not only monetary assistance, but also in-kind supplies, one-on-one farm advice and farming education, as well as mentorships.

Hallinan to vice-chair law revision commission

Thomas Hallinan, an attorney from Ceres, will serve as vice chairperson of the California Law Revision Commission through Aug. 31, 2017. He was appointed to the commission in 2015 and is a partner at Churchwell, White LLP where he serves as the city attorney and counsel for several local government agencies in the Northern San Joaquin Valley. He also serves on the Yosemite Community College District board of trustees.

Good deeds

Geneva Presbyterian Church’s mission committee has been busy with its various benevolence projects. It held its fourth Pulled Pork Barbecue as a fundraiser for various events. Members of the church also bought enough tickets to allow 35 Modesto police officers to have a free meal at the Aug. 4 event. The church – with a membership of 130 people (90 who attend regularly) – also generated contributions for socks, underwear, and shower sanitizer for the mobile shower, and 51 hygiene kits were donated as well. The mission committee is chaired by Kellie Jones of Modesto.
