40 YEARS AGO: It was announced that Pacific Gas and Electric Co.’s planned construction and operation of a nuclear reactor in eastern Stanislaus County by 1985 had been set back by two years. With the delay, PG&E was then proposing to build two 1.1 million kilowatt reactors at almost the same time, at a cost of $3 billion. Completion of that project was estimated for 1987 for unit 1 and 1988 for unit 2. The proposed site for at least one of the reactors was at Barnett Ranch. The State Energy Commission and the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission would both have to approve the construction once notice of intent to build had been submitted.
