YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: It was announced that after 15 years of planning, controversy and litigation, bids for work on the new Don Pedro Dam would finally open. The project that was a shared venture between the Modesto and Turlock irrigation districts had begun the final phase of preliminary paperwork on the dam. Construction was tentatively scheduled for July 1, 1967, with six companies bidding for different parts of the project. Bidders had to specify the cost of design for turbines, and for the manufacturing and installation. Bids ranged from $17,647 to $76,000 for design, and $1.3 million to $3.3 million for manufacturing and installation.
